Early Life
Ross Ulbricht was born in March 1984 in Austin, Texas. He and his sister, Calla were raised by his parents, Lyn and Kirk Ulbricht. Ross demonstrated exceptional potential as a bright kid since he was a kid. While showcasing his dedication to personal growth and community service, he became a Boy Scout and attended the rank of Eagle Scout. Ulbricht was an excellent student who received full academic scholarships to attend prestigious Universities.
Ross studied at West Ridge Middle School and then joined Westlake High School. He obtained his high school graduation degree in 2002. After that, he earned a full academic scholarship to study at the University of Texas at Dallas. Ross obtained a Bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Texas in 2006. Furthermore, he earned an additional scholarship to study at Pennsylvania State University to attend a master’s degree program.
Ulbricht became more interested in libertarian economic theory when he graduated from Pennsylvania. After graduating from Penn State in 2009, he moved back to Austin. Earlier, he tried his luck in day trading, but could not achieve success. Similarly, he began a video game company, but it failed as well. Then, he and his friend Donny Palmertree built Good Wagon Books, an online used bookseller.
Career
Ross Ulbricht ran the bookseller all by himself when his friend, Palmertree moved to Dallas. During this time, he had started making plans to start Silk Road, which he initially named Underground Brokers. Ross wanted to build a website where anyone could buy anything without disclosing their identity. Initially, he ranked Silk Road on the Tor Network as an onion service, which implements route traffic and data encryption using intermediary servers.
By using the Tor network, Ross could change the server’s IP address and he used Bitcoin for transactions on the site. He used the username, Dread Pirate Roberts for Silk Road. His suspicious activities came to the notice of a drug agency investigator who gained inside details about Silk Road’s operations. Following that, Silk Road’s server was seized by law enforcement in Iceland.
In October 2013, Ross was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Francisco Public Library near the Glen Park branch. The BFI accused Ross of being the mastermind behind Silk Road. Ross was ordered held without bail. He was charged with multiple conspiracy in February 2014 such as conspiracy to commit money laundering, narcotics conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit computer hacking.
During his trial in New York Federal court, he was not charged on murder-for-hire charges. He was alleged by federal prosecutors of paying $730 thousand targeting at least 5 people. Ross was convicted on all counts in February 2015 after a jury trial that took place in January 2015. Ross was granted a full and unconditional pardon by U. S. President, Donald Trump on January 21, 2015. President Trump called his life sentence ridiculous and personally called his mom to inform her of her pardon.
